An Extremely Smart Way to Upgrade Your Network Service

As broadband access technologies have evolved rapidly, Service Providers needed to upgrade their broadband network services every few years to meet the increasing demands. Traditionally, Service Providers have to replace the whole CPE device in order to provide faster internet speed to the subscribers. It not only increases their CAPEX and OPEX but also requires more time and resources to deploy.

In realizing this problem, Metanoia integrated the Physical layer (PHY) of some broadband access technologies within an Small-Form Factor Pluggable (SFP)). Metanoia PHY SFPs can be integrated with any router, switch or residential gateway, that has an SFP cage, as a type of WAN. With this approach, there is no need for Service Providers to maintain more than one type of CPE device in the field or in the warehouse any more. Moreover, this also provides future upgrade capabilities. Users can easily upgrade to any broadband access technology supporting desired data rate, simply by plugging in different type of WAN SFPs such as VDSL2 35b/ or even optical TRx SFPs within the same CPE box and using the same user interface.

Long Reach Ethernet over xDSL


Ethernet extender

Within the Industrial Ethernet market, the use of MSA compliant SFP interface is quite common and widely available among Ethernet switches, Ethernet Line Card Modules, media converters and other network appliances. By combining this SFP interface with Metanoia's core VDSL2 broadband access technology, it is possible to create a perfect option for system integrators to extend the typical Ethernet coverage (100 meters) without complicated wiring and unnecessary capital expenses.

Leveraging the VDSL2 technology, Metanoia developed the Long Reach Ethernet over VDSL2 (LREoVD2) SFP transceiver, which can easily be applied in any environment with existing 2-wire cable, such as phone line, to avoid the cost of rewiring. It can dramatically extend the Ethernet service on UTP wire with distance up to 3000 meters. Furthermore, Full Duplex 100Mbps speed can be supported even up to 400 meters with standard Cat.5e 2-wire cable.


SOIP (Surveillance over IP)

Analog CCTV (Closed-circuit Television) has been a common deployment option for industrial surveillance applications for quite some time. However, there were some disadvantages in this kind of deployment, such as the wiring limitation, transmission instability, the difficulty of real-time management, etc.

Therefore, Service Providers developed an analog surveillance system over IP networks. The main idea is to leverage a video server to collect the data from all of the analog video cameras, and use the IP network to transmit it to the control center via Ethernet cable. This approach not only enhanced the security level of data transmission but also guaranteed ease of management. As a next step, in order to improve the image quality, it becomes imperative for the Service Providers to digitize the video surveillance system. Moreover, Service Providers also need to expand their network bandwidth to transmit high quality digital video images. To address these enhancements, instead of suggesting a solution with IP cameras over 10/100 Ethernet cable, Metanoia proposes a complete solution with MT-V5311 LREoVD2 SFP. With the existing SFP cage in the managed / unmanaged switch, MT-V5311 LREoVD2 SFP can extend the Ethernet connection beyond 100m with up to hundreds of Megabits/second data rate.


Metanoia MT-V5311 LREoVD2 SFP is a VDSL2 based technology. Therefore it can be connected with any existing 2-wire cable in the field, which guarantees deployment flexibility for IP based surveillance system. Moreover, the Metanoia MT-V5311 VDSL2 chipset also supports QoS (Quality of Service) features that can divide the video stream traffic segments and set up different priorities for VLANs (Virtual LANs) in order to provide timely delivery and reliable transmission service. The hot pluggable characteristic of the SFP interface also allows Services Providers to substitute or add in extra SFPs as needed without interrupting the entire system. Furthermore, the MT-V5311 LREoVD2 SFP supports configurable symmetric and asymmetric band plans as needed for any specific application requirements.


Outdoor Wi-Fi AP Extender

As smart handheld devices become more and more popular and ubiquitous, the demand for network service with seamless mobility is also getting stronger. Therefore, Wi-Fi access service has become an important service that government, enterprises or even hotel operators must take into consideration right from the beginning. Deploying Outdoor Wi-Fi AP is a very common way for Service Providers to extend the reach of the broadband access services, which include 3G/4G LTE, in-door wireless LAN, or fixed network services such as DOCSIS, xPON and xDSL technologies.

However, the way to extend the Wi-Fi coverage at an extremely low cost still remains an elusive problem for Service Providers. Since 2-wire UTP cable used to be the most common wiring in outdoor surroundings, leveraging Metanoia LREoVD2 SFP with such existing copper cable is definitely a perfect choice to extend the Wi-Fi AP coverage up to 400 meters with symmetric 100Mbps / 100Mbps data rate. This is possible if the Wi-Fi AP includes an SFP cage.


Broadband Access for Mobile Backhaul

Using bandwidth-hungry data services such as video streaming, web conference or various types of Apps on smart handheld devices, is the most common scenario in our daily life. To catch up with the growing bandwidth demand, Wireless Service Providers have evolved from 2G/3G to LTE (4G) within few years. However, the increasing demand for bandwidth has become a burden for traditional TDM mobile backhaul network. Considering the cost and the difficulty of deployment for traditional TDM mobile backhaul network, various solutions for the last mile connection to cellular site have been proposed, including fiber, microwave and copper technologies.


Among all these solutions, although fiber technology can provide ultra-high bandwidth capacity to support the backhaul requirements of different mobile wireless networks, fixed broadband access network is definitely the most cost-efficient and the fastest to deploy, since copper pairs are commonly available on most cellular sites around the world. To meet the backhaul requirements, leveraging multi-pair bonding residential VDSL2 broadband network is a promising option for Service Providers. More importantly, it can meet the current and future bandwidth requirements for mobile backhaul without expensive wiring and complicated deployment.

With the FTTC/ FTTdp architecture, Metanoia MT-V5311 LREoVD2 SFP can be leveraged as a medium to long-term solution. In future, Service Providers can even serve those end-users with heavy bandwidth demand and video consumption by plugging optical TRx SFP to provide Gigabit data rate without having to change the CPE.
